Compressor manufacturer opens first U.S.-based facility
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corp. (MCO-I) has started operating in North America at its facility in Pearland, Texas, south of Houston.
The complex, also known as Pearland Works, handles packaging, shipping, storage, service and maintenance of compressors and mechanical drive steam turbines. It is the first U.S.-based manufacturing and service location for the Japanese-owned company, which currently houses all manufacturing capabilities in Hiroshima, Japan.
To date, MCO-I has invested more than US$75 million into the Pearland Works facility. It features 180,000 sq. ft. (16723 m2) of space, housing a variety of capabilities including packaging and assembly, vertical and horizontal rotor storage, repair and maintenance services, administrative offices, and a training center. Additionally, US$26 million of new manufacturing equipment has been purchased along with a 300 ton (272 tonne) overhead crane.
MCO-I’s expansion into Pearland has two phases, the first of which is complete. The second phase involves the company expanding the facility to offer testing and full manufacturing capabilities. Once both stages are complete, MCO-I estimates that Pearland Works will employ more than 200 people, with a focus on engineering and machining positions.
